Reading Comprehension Workbook Grade 1 Passages and Questions for Guided : Level E Guided Reading Comprehension Test Prep Books Passages and Questions for Homeschool, Kindergarten, 1st Grade :
This product is designed to help kids who are reading at Guided Reading Level E become skilled at reading comprehension success simple passages and answering text-based comprehension questions.
As students find the evidence that supports their answers, they participate in their very first close reading lessons.
Once students are familiar with the format, this pack is ideal for morning work.
This packet includes fifteen passages and four text-based multiple choice questions for each passage. One page of written response questions has been added (on 7/28/2016) for each passage.
Supports the following standards:
Common Core Standards ELA.Literacy.RI.1.1 and ELA.Literacy.RL.1.1: Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Common Core Standards ELA-Literacy.RI.K.1 and ELA-Literacy.RL.K.1: With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
These Reading comprehension social studies passages are also useful for choral reading and fluency work. I work through these passages with students during both small and whole group lessons, having students "answer" the questions with bingo chips instead of circling the answers. We discuss how to choose the best answer for each question and how to look back in the passage to check answers. I then send the passage home for students to read to their parents and complete for homework. I find this is a great confidence builder for kids and that parents take pride in hearing their child read the passage and then explain how to choose the best answer for each question.
The following passages are included:
- Tails
- Faster
- Wheels
- The Storm
- Camping
- Reading Comprehension Workbook Grade 1 - Leaves
- Moose
- From the Farm
- Balls
- At Night
- Where, Oh Where?
- The Picnic

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- An entertaining, educational, and nonthreatening aid to understanding earth science. The easy experiments are carefully organized in sections dealing with the Earth in space, rocks and minerals, crustal movement, erosion, atmosphere, weather, and the oceans. Each experiment includes a purpose, a list of needed materials, step-by-step instructions, expected results, and a scientific explanation of the results. Each double-page spread features a helpful black-line drawing of the procedure; cautions are given where any danger is possible and notes comment on desirable weather or other necessary conditions. Activities range from making a peanut butter sandwich to demonstrating a sedimentary rock formation, or erasing pencil marks on paper to showing how rocks change into sand and thin soil. The concepts are so elementary and the directions so clear that students can learn just by reading and visualizing them, although it will be much more fun to actually perform the experiments. --Rosie Peasley, Somerset School, Modesto, CA

"The Eighth Story. Nineteen Years Later.

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places."

From School Library Journal

Playwright Thorne and director Tiffany (who previously collaborated on Hope and Let the Right One In) worked with J.K. Rowling to extend the "Harry Potter" universe with an eighth "installment" in the form of the script from the new West End production. The book starts where the last chapter of Deathly Hallows left off—19 years after the main events of the series—with Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione all saying goodbye to their children as they leave for Hogwarts. As Albus, Harry and Ginny's youngest son, attends Hogwarts, he is plagued by the Potter legacy—something he never wanted—and, as he's sorted into Slytherin, is terrible at Quidditch, and constantly compared to his famous father, he becomes reclusive and angsty. His sole friend is Scorpius Malfoy, the only son of Draco Malfoy—prompting further separation from his father. When Albus hatches a plot to go back in time to save the life of Cedric Diggory—what Albus views as the biggest mistake his father made—time becomes distorted and Harry is left to examine his own life, his relationship with his son, and how love can sometimes be much more complicated than it seems. This is an interesting extension of the "Harry Potter" universe, but readers should go into it knowing that it's its own beast. Rowling didn't write it (much to the fury and vitriol of many fans), and it is in script form, so it loses some of the magic that won over millions of readers back when it all began. However, many of the themes that made the original series great are still in abundance—love and friendship conquering all, facing your flaws and accepting them—so that it simultaneously still feels like a "Harry Potter" tale while remaining its own story. VERDICT It is unlikely that the script will create new Potter followers, owing to its format (reading a script vs. reading a novel is a whole other ballgame), but it's a well-crafted and enjoyable read.—Tyler Hixson, School Library Journal

No one can read far in the Old Testament without encountering numerous acts of violence that are sanctioned in the text and attributed to both God and humans. Over the years, these texts have been used to justify all sorts of violence: from colonizing people and justifying warfare, to sanctioning violence against women and children. For those who read the Bible as Scripture, these depictions of "virtuous" violence pose tremendous moral and theological challenges. What can be done to stop people from using the Old Testament in such destructive ways, and how might these violent texts be read more faithfully?

Eric Seibert faces these challenges head-on by confronting the problem of " virtuous" violence and urging people to engage in an ethically responsible reading of these troublesome texts. He offers a variety of reading strategies designed to critique textually sanctioned violence, while still finding ways to use even the most difficult texts constructively, thus providing a desperately needed approach to the violence of Scripture that can help us live more peaceably in a world plagued by religious violence.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Seibert has waded into the tough and demanding question of violence in the Bible with great courage and sensitivity. He exposits the deep problem of pervasive violence and suggests venturesome ways to counter such terrifying testimony. This book will be an important reference point for the interpretive conversation that we must continue to have." --Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this constructive, no-nonsense guide, business consultant Heim addresses women executives who, despite technical proficiency, hard work and managerial skills equal or superior to those of their male co-workers, have been passed over for promotions. With Golant ( No More Hysterectomies ), she stresses the need for women to study the sports-modeled, competitive culture of men, focused on money and status, and to learn to work according to its rules without betraying their "inner selves." Using sports jargon and examples, she advises such techniques as attacking a problem--not the person responsible--adhering to team goals and accepting criticism from a "coach." She also offers valuable tips on positive body language (no tears), dressing and more, and reminds women that "in a man's world--as in sports--winning is all that matters."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-From numerous discussion prompts to suggestions for recording personal observations, this series is designed to engage. Johnson carefully articulates the difference between climate and weather and clearly explains topics such as the water cycle, forms of precipitation, and factors affecting temperature. For the most part, the author avoids overlap among volumes. However, diagrams of the water cycle and the Earth's rotation appear more than once. Each book contains information about meteorologists and some of their instruments. This feature ties in nicely with the activities that conclude the volumes, which include instructions on how to make projects such as a windsock and thermometer box. Not only are students encouraged to keep a weather journal, but the titles also explain how to use collected data to create relevant graphs or charts. These activities could be carried out by an entire class or small group at lower elementary levels or by older students individually.α(c) Copyright 2011. The Literature for Learning Standards-Based Study Guide was developed to help bring back the joy of reading novels into the classroom. This study guide uses an entire novel rather than an abridged version to teach students the fundamentals of reading, writing, and grammar as a primary or secondary source for learning many of the content standards in language arts. This study guide provides practice activities to help students improve reading comprehension skills, increase vocabulary, develop essay organizational and writing skills, and improve spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills within the context of the novel. The format of the study guide is modeled after the types of questions commonly found on standardized tests. This format is stylized in a comparable layout and contains similar terminology used in state and national standardized tests so that students become familiar with the types of questions on which they will be tested, based on their grade-level standards.
